Short Exam Notes

Easy revision notes for RGPV exam

Computer

Computer is an electronic device used to accept data, process it and produce meaningful information. Main characteristics are high speed, accuracy, automation, large storage capacity and reliability.

Classification of Computer

Computers are classified on working principle as analog, digital and hybrid computers. Based on size, computers are micro, mini, mainframe and super computers.

Computer Organization

Computer organization describes the functional units of a computer and their interaction. Main units are input unit, CPU, memory unit and output unit.

CPU

CPU is called the brain of computer. It performs arithmetic operations, logical operations and controls all system activities with the help of ALU, CU and registers.

Registers

Registers are small high-speed storage locations inside CPU. Examples are accumulator, program counter, instruction register and memory address register.

Bus Architecture

Bus is a communication pathway connecting computer components. Main types are data bus, address bus and control bus.

Memory System

Memory stores data and instructions. Primary memory includes RAM and ROM. Secondary memory includes hard disk, CD/DVD and pen drive.

Input & Output Devices

Input devices enter data into computer, such as keyboard, mouse and scanner. Output devices show processed results, such as monitor, printer and speaker.

Software

Software is a collection of programs and instructions. System software controls hardware, while application software performs specific user tasks.

Operating System

Operating system is system software that manages hardware and software resources. It performs process, memory, file, device and security management.

MS Office

MS Word is used for document creation, MS PowerPoint is used for presentations, and MS Excel is used for calculations, charts, functions and formulas.

Computer Applications

Computers are used in e-business, healthcare, bio-informatics, remote sensing, GIS, meteorology, gaming, multimedia and animation.

Quick Revision Points

Must remember points for exam

CPU: Brain of computer
RAM: Temporary or volatile memory
ROM: Permanent or non-volatile memory
Operating System: Manages hardware and software resources
MS Excel: Spreadsheet software used for calculations, charts and formulas
Computer Block Diagram: Input → CPU → Memory → Output
