Short Exam Notes

Easy points for fast revision

Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics is the branch of science that deals with heat, work and energy interactions. It is used in power plants, refrigeration systems, automobiles and turbines.

Thermodynamic System

A thermodynamic system is a quantity of matter or region under study. It may be open system, closed system or isolated system.

Zeroth Law

If two bodies are separately in thermal equilibrium with a third body, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other. It is the basis of temperature measurement.

First Law

First law states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another.

Second Law

Second law defines the direction of heat transfer. Heat cannot completely convert into work without losses.

Enthalpy

Enthalpy is the total heat content of a system. It is represented by H and commonly used in steam and heat calculations.

Boiler

Boiler is a closed vessel used to generate steam by heating water. Boilers are mainly classified into fire tube boilers and water tube boilers.

Boiler Mountings & Accessories

Boiler mountings are safety devices like safety valve and pressure gauge. Accessories improve efficiency, such as economizer, superheater and air preheater.

Quick Revision Formulas

Important numerical formulas

First Law of Thermodynamics: Q = ΔU + W
Work Done at Constant Pressure: W = P(V₂ − V₁)
Enthalpy: H = U + PV
Entropy: dS = dQ / T
Boiler Efficiency: η = (Heat utilized / Heat supplied) × 100
