Short Exam Notes

Easy points for fast revision

Measurement

Measurement is the process of comparing an unknown quantity with a standard quantity. It helps in accuracy, quality control and reducing production errors.

Errors in Measurement

Error is the difference between true value and measured value. Main types are systematic error, random error and gross error.

Vernier Caliper

Vernier caliper is used to measure external diameter, internal diameter and depth accurately. Its common least count is 0.02 mm.

Micrometer

Micrometer is a precision instrument used for accurate measurement of small dimensions like wire diameter and small thickness. Its common least count is 0.01 mm.

Casting

Casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into mould cavity and allowed to solidify. It is useful for complex shapes.

Welding

Welding is the process of joining two metals by heat and pressure. Common types are arc welding and gas welding.

Lathe Machine

Lathe machine is used for machining cylindrical components. Main operations are turning, facing, drilling and thread cutting.

Drilling Machine

Drilling machine is used to produce holes in materials. Main operations are drilling, reaming and tapping.

Quick Revision Formulas

Important numerical formulas

Strain: ε = ΔL / L
Vernier Least Count: LC = 1 MSD − 1 VSD
Micrometer Least Count: LC = Pitch / Number of divisions
Sine Bar Formula: sin θ = h / L
