1. Boiler Troubles
Boiler troubles are problems caused due to impurities present in boiler water. These troubles reduce boiler efficiency and may damage the boiler.
2. Sludge
Sludge is a soft, loose and slimy deposit formed in colder parts of boilers. It is comparatively easy to remove.
3. Scale
Scale is a hard, sticky and insoluble deposit formed on the inner walls of boilers. It reduces heat transfer and increases fuel consumption.
4. Priming
Priming is the process in which water droplets are carried along with steam. It produces wet steam and may damage turbines.
5. Foaming
Foaming is the formation of stable bubbles or foam on the surface of boiler water. It is mainly caused by oil, grease and high alkalinity.
6. Boiler Corrosion
Boiler corrosion is the destruction of boiler metal due to chemical or electrochemical reactions. It is mainly caused by dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and acidic water.
7. Caustic Embrittlement
Caustic embrittlement is the cracking of boiler metal due to high concentration of sodium hydroxide. It can be prevented by phosphate conditioning.
8. Lime Soda Method
In Lime Soda Method, hardness causing salts are removed by adding lime and soda ash. It is economical and suitable for large scale industries.
9. Zeolite Process
In Zeolite Process, hard water is passed through sodium zeolite. Calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged with sodium ions.
10. Ion Exchange Method
Ion Exchange Method uses cation and anion exchange resins to remove ions from water. It produces highly pure demineralized water.
